It is important to be precise when talking about PFAS. PFAS is an extremely broad family of fluorinated substances, and different types can have very different properties and regulatory profiles.

C6-based fluorinated chemistry should therefore not simply be described as “PFAS-free”. Instead, our focus is on avoiding specific legacy substances of concern and using more modern chemistry that complies with the regulations applicable to our products and markets.

For us, transparency matters just as much as performance.

Why we moved away from legacy PFAS chemistry

In recent years, there has been increasing public and regulatory attention around PFAS — a large family of synthetic fluorinated chemicals.

Consumers are understandably asking more questions:

Do protective coatings contain PFAS? What type of fluorinated chemistry is being used? And how can you tell whether a product meets current safety and regulatory requirements?

At Nanocoating.co.uk, we believe these are important questions.

That is why we want to be clear about both what our products contain and what we have chosen to move away from.

What are PFAS?

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

It is a broad term covering thousands of different synthetic fluorinated substances. They have been used in many industrial and consumer applications because of useful properties such as resistance to water, oil, dirt, heat and chemicals.

Certain PFAS have become a significant environmental and health concern because of properties such as environmental persistence and, for some substances, their ability to accumulate in humans, animals or the wider environment.

Well-known examples that have been subject to strict regulation include substances such as:

  • PFOA
  • PFOS

For that reason, regulation of PFAS continues to develop in the UK, Europe and elsewhere.

Our decision in 2020

In 2020, we made a deliberate decision to move away from older fluorinated coating technologies containing substances such as PFOA and [INSERT VERIFIED SUBSTANCES].

We switched to a C6-based coating technology supplied by our European manufacturing partner.

This decision was made with both product performance and responsible product development in mind.

According to documentation supplied by our manufacturer:

Where possible, we recommend stating exact substances, test limits and standards rather than using broad claims such as “completely PFAS-free”.

What is C6 technology?

C6 technology is a term commonly used for certain shorter-chain fluorinated coating technologies.

These technologies were developed as alternatives to some older long-chain fluorinated chemistries and can provide properties such as water, oil and stain repellency.

Our coating technology is based on:

We do not describe C6 technology as universally “PFAS-free”, because PFAS terminology covers a very broad range of substances.

What we can state is exactly which substances our manufacturer confirms are absent from our products.

So, is C6 still considered PFAS?

This is where terminology matters.

PFAS is not one individual chemical. It is a very broad family of fluorinated substances.

Under widely used modern definitions, some C6 and fluorotelomer-based substances can fall within the PFAS category.

That does not mean that every PFAS has the same hazard profile, behaves in the same way or is subject to the same restrictions.

It also means that claims such as:

“C6 is not PFAS”

can be misleading.

We therefore prefer a more transparent approach.

Rather than making a blanket “PFAS-free” statement, we tell customers which specific substances our coatings are confirmed not to contain.

European production and strict quality control

Our coatings are manufactured in Europe by our manufacturing partner in the Netherlands.

Working with a European manufacturer gives us direct access to product documentation, technical specifications and information about the chemistry used in our products.

Depending on the product and destination, relevant chemical legislation may include UK and/or EU requirements.

Our manufacturer provides:

  • Technical product documentation
  • Safety information
  • Regulatory compliance information
  • Information about restricted substances

This allows us to communicate our product specifications as accurately as possible.

For customers in Great Britain, chemical products may be subject to applicable UK REACH requirements. Different regulatory arrangements may apply in Northern Ireland.
